The Indiana state finals wrestling tournament is structured so that the opening round, taking place on Friday, is the blood round. Winning guarantees a placement medal as a top-eight wrestler, losing ends your post-season immediately.
Neither 190 lb senior Lucas Anderson nor 126 lb junior Max Quiroz had trouble Friday getting to this morning’s quarterfinal. Quiroz won via technical fall (19-2, 2:50) over Qwanell Gabriel of Lakeland. Quiroz won his quarterfinal vs. Wyatt Ulrey of Evansville Mater Dei, winning a major decision, 13-1, to advance to the semifinal. Quiroz is 22-0 since making a midseason switch from 132 pounds to 126.
Anderson earned a major decision (20-6) over Spencer Fain of Floyd Centrall on Friday and Anderson will earn at least a top eight medal, even though he wasn’t in the top eight of Indianamat.com’s East Chicago Semi-state rankings. Anderson proved those rankings wrong by winning semi-state, and again by getting to the second day of the state finals. Anderson faces Kyle Harden of Indianapolis Cathedral.
