Luke Sorgic, Peytan Belegal and No. 1 doubles Jake Bell and Shane Henry take their matches in 3-2 win at Valparaiso
Not too many DAC opponents can make Chesterton No. 1 singles player Luke Sorgic break a sweat, so match day tends to be his lightest day of the week.
Tuesday was no exception at Valparaiso, where Sorgic was the first to finish and Chesterton went on to defeat Valparaiso, 3-2. It was a low-stress 3-2 win though because all three points came in one-sided matches.
Sorgic won his 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 singles Peytan Belegal won his 6-1, 6-1, and No. 1 doubles Jake Bell and Shane Henry won theirs 6-1, 6-2.
As easy a time as Sorgic had winning his match, he was able to find things he could have done better.
“I could have hit a harder ball,” Sorgic said. “Too much height, too tight on my forehands and backhands. And I should have had more pace this match.”
Sorgic ran his record to 5-1, his only loss coming by a 6-3, 6-4 margin against perennial powerhouse South Bend St. Joseph.
Sorgic played three two-set matches in the Noblesville Tournament last weekend and dropped just one game.
Sorgic will have plenty of short matches in DAC play, so he won’t get as much conditioning in as teammates.
“Sometimes I’ll hit some more later or do some footwork drills,” he said.
He is noticeably better this season than last and said one reason is that his backhandm, “was a liability last year. Every match my opponent would target it. This year I’m a lot more confident in it. I’m using it as an offensive shot now.”
Noblesville Tournament
Chesterton 3, Noblesville 2: Belegal won a marathon two-set match that lasted close to three hours, according to coach Tom Bour, and left Belegal so gassed that he substituted Owen Sularski for him in the next match. Chesterton 4, New Palestine 1: After losing in the first two matches, Bell andHenry finished strong, winning 7-5, 6-1. A rested Belegal had a much easier time winning his match at No. 2 singles than against Noblesville. He defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-0.
