The Chesterton girls tennis team, which won the program’s fifth consecutive sectional title last week, made it to the final of the LaPorte regional and lost to South Bend St. Joseph, 4-1 in the LaPorte sectional final played Thursday night at Kesling Park.
But the season continues for No. 1 doubles senior Aleksa Sorgic and junior Amelia Smith, who are undefeated in postseason play after beating SBSJ’s No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-3.
Teams that are in the postseason have a chance to advance downstate. Since New Prairie’s No. 1 doubles team also was undefeated, the Trojans had to get past them before putting Indianapolis on their schedule. Sorgic and Smith didn’t have any trouble taking care of that match, 6-0, 6-0 Friday.
Next up for the 22-1 tandem is face Fairfield on Saturday, June 7 at North Central High in Indianapolis in the regional round of the individual doubles tournament. Fairfield freshman Vienna Griffith and senior Elise Schwartz have a 15-2 overall record. If the Trojans win that match, the most likely opponent later that day would be Park Tudor’s 21-0 tandem of senior Emelyn Harris and junior Marissa Benge.
Chesterton proved a tougher out for St. Joe because of its doubels teams.
St. Joe won all three singles matches and dealt Chesterton’s No. 2 doubles team of Anisa Faroh and Lauren Pilarski, its first loss, 6-7 (5-7), 2-6.
“It was a great season,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “I couldn’t ask for anything more out of these girls. We have some major pieces graduating, but we have some youth on the way. A lot of sophomores are right on the cusp of being legit varsity players. The sophomore class was my most improved class overall and we have eight of them.”
From the varsity lineup, Sorgic, Faroh and Pilarski are graduating, as are Caroline Carrillo, Gabby Pappas and Rosa Schmahl.
Chesterton returns all three of its varsity singles players: No. 1 Kenzie Kania (17-7), No. 2 Lizzy Navarro (10-11) and No. 3 Kendall Gallion (10-8).
