Chesterton’s girls volleyball team didn’t perform at its best in sweeping three sets from Andrean, the overmatched visitor, but Tenley Davis’ milestone moment could not have gone much better.
Abby Parrish set her and Davis smacked the floor hard with the shot as she has so many times during her four-year career as a starter. It landed between Seams 1 and 6 and it was the 1,102nd of her career.
It occurred in the first set of Chesterton’s 25-14, 25-18, 25-22 sweep of the 59ers.
Meghan Gaffigan (2018-21), a senior engineering student and volleyball player at Cornell University and the niece of comedian Jim Gaffigan, now ranks second in Chesterton history with 1,101 kills.
Davis, bound for Loyola University of Chicago on a volleyball scholarship, set the Chesterton single season record for kills last season with 485, shattering Michelle Fekete’s total of 403 in 2009.
Davis said she was hoping that Parrish would be the one to set her record-breaking kill.
“We’ve been playing together for so long,” Davis said. “So, it was exciting to have her setting me for it. She’s been my setter since seventh grade, when we played club.
Davis finished the night with 14 kills, pushing the record to 1,115, had a salty .440 hitting percentage and a team-high seven digs. Michigan recruit junior Luca Bombacinio led the team with 17 kills.
Davis’ favorite kill of the 1,115?
“I want to say my 500th point kill was probably one of my favorites because it was against Valpo to get the sectional finals (sophomore year) and it was with Abby too, actually,” Davis said.
Stiffer competition awaits the Trojans (6-1) tonight at always tough LaPorte (5-3) in the DAC opener for both schools. So far, Penn is their only common opponent. Chesterton defeated the Lady Kingsmen 3-1 and the Slicers lost to Penn 3-1.
