Chesterton swam well enough at Friday night’s preliminaries at IU Indianapolis to have at least one athlete in 8 of 11 swim events at Saturday’s finals.
The Trojans made the A final (top eight) in all three relay races and two individual events. Three swimmers made it to B finals (9-to-16), also known as the consolation finals.
Sophomore Brenley Bonez had the third-fastest time in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke and will also swim in two relays. Junior Adalyn Laughner is seeded sixth in the 100 backstroke and had the 11th-best time to make the consolation final in the 100 individual medley. She joins Bonez on two relays.
Senior Tegan Werner edged freshman teammate Brynn Law for the final spot in the 50 free, but Law qualified for the consolation final with the 11th-best time in the 100 free.
The Trojans had at least one swimmer in every event at the prelims, but did not make Saturday’s field in the 100 butterfly, 200 free and 500 free races.
Chesterton earned the No. 5 seed in the 200 medley relay with Laughner, Bonez, Reese Kellstrom and Law swimming. Law, MaKenzie Soto, Werner and Peyton Ostertag took the Trojans to the seventh-best time Friday night and Ostertag, Werner, Laughner and Bonez had the night’s fifth-best time in the 400 freestyle relay. Law is listed as an alternate in the event and is eligible to be subbed in because she is swimming just three other events.
Saturday’s meet gets underway with the diving preliminaries and semifinals starting at 8 a.m. CT. Bella Walters is fourth in the order.
The championship and consolation finals in all the swimming events and the diving finals portion of the program start at noon CT.
