A top-five finish at state was Chesterton swim and dive head coach Jenni Anderson’s preseason goal for the girls team and based on how sectionals went across the state last weekend, the Trojans appear in line to accomplish that.
Carmel, Fort Wayne Carroll and Fishers stack up as the most loaded teams in the state but after that, Chesterton has as good a shot as any school to finish fourth.
The Trojans have at least one competitor in all 12 events, three in the 50-yard freestyle, three in the 100 breaststroke and two in the 100 backstroke.
All three relay teams are ranked in the top six in the psych sheets (sectional times throughout the state, ranked in order).
Sophomore Brenley Bonez is ranked third in two different individual events, and junior Adalyn Laughner fourth in one event, seventh in another.
Bonez, Laughner, seniors Peyton Ostertag and Tegan Werner and freshman Brynn Law are competing in two individual events and two relay races.
Coming off an eighth-place finish last season, the Trojans girls program is in line to have its first back-to-back top 10 finishes since Hall of Fame coach Kevin Kinel topped off his career with a 17th consecutive top 10 finish in 2019, giving him 29 on the girls side during his 40 years in charge of the program.
The Trojans have not done better than fourth since placing third in 2021.
Sophomore diver Bella Walters qualified for the state meet by finishing third at Tuesday night’s regional.
