It’s been a busy, exciting time for Chesterton’s four returning All-Ameircans from the girls swim team.
Sophomore Brenley Bonez was one of 52 swimmers her age invited to train this past weekend at the US Olympic training center in Colorado Springs. The previous weekend, Bonez and junior Adalyn Laughner swam in a World Cup event in Westmont, Illinois, competing against swimmers of all ages from throughout the world.
Senior Peyton Ostertag recently announced that she will continue her education and swimming career next year at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where former Trojans swimmer Luke Wheele is a freshman on the swim team.
Earlier this fall, Laughner (Purdue) and senior Tegan Werner (Tufts University) made news announcing their college destinations.
Chesterton’s 200 medley relay team of Laughner (backstroke), Bonez (breaststroke), Werner (butterfly) and Ostertag earned All-American honors by swimming the 17th-fastest high school time in the nation. The same four swimmers also earned All-American distinction for swimming the nation’s 39th-fastest 400 freestyle relay.
Bonez earned an additional All-American honor with the 39th-best 100 breaststroke in the nation.
The medley relay was a school record, as was Bonez’s 100 breaststroke.
Laughner said she is “pretty confident” that she can set the school record in the backstroke this season and she and Bonez both said they will lower last season’s medley relay time and has a good shot to take down the 400 free relay record as well.
Any other records in danger of falling?
“I can try to break my own record and maybe the 50 free, too,” Bonez said.
The Trojans placed eighth at the state meet last winter and project well for an improvement there with a year of extra training and the addition of a talented freshman class.
