Clear your desk and don’t stop until you find your calendar. Circle Sept. 6 and “Brown Field,” which is where Valparaiso University plays its home football games.
When that day comes, don your Chesterton football hoodie and know that you won’t be the only one making such a short trip to see a college football game.
Adrian College plays at Valpo U for a 6 p.m. kickoff that day.
Linebacker Josh Davis’ commitment to Adrian College in Michigan gives the NCAA Division III school three players from Chesterton for the upcoming season. Quarterback Sebastian Boswell redshirted his first season and will try to earn the starting job in camp. Linebacker Cole Gonzales, also a 2024 CHS graduate, appeared in two games and made a tackle. Luke Stento, a 2022 Chesterton graduate, earned so many college credits in high school that he’s able to graduate in three years from Franklin College and will transfer to Adrian College with two years of eligibility remaining to pursue a graduate degree in sports management and play football for the Bulldgos.
Davis said that in the middle of his senior season Gonzales informed him that the coaching staff wanted him to make a campus visit to Adrian.
“The Saturday after the LaPorte game we went there and I just liked it, everything about it,” Davis said. “We have people from Cheese going there. I can play with Cole, Boz, Luke Stento now, so it’s just like we’re back to action. It’s like having my family back out there.”
Davis said he’s not waiting until he gets to Michigan to get serious about getting into football shape.
“I’ve been running at the beach,” Davis said. “I run the dunes and the big hill to keep my wind going. I’ve been doing it by myself. I have my AirPods in.”
Davis, who said he expects to stay at linebacker at Adrian, said his former and future teammates told him “They love it there. The atmosphere is great.”
Not all the players in the Sep. 6 game at Brown Field will be lining up for Adrian. Isaiah Fowler, a 2023 CHS grad, plays defensive tackle for the Beacons.
Offensive linemen Logan Donahue (North Park University) and Ryan Gray (Western Illinois University) joined Davis at a signing ceremony in the cafeteria.
Donahue was the first player to rotate in at all three O-line positions when somebody suffered an injury or needed a breather. He said he might room with Cole Richards, who committed to North Park before he did.
“I wasn’t ready to be done playing and I had a chance to play somewhere close to home with people I like playing with,” Donahue said.
Kyle Rooker is heading into his seventh season as the head coach at North Park, which is in Chicago.
“I like Coach Rooker and all the academic stuff he puts on his kids,” Donahue said. “His kids on the football team have to sit in the front row of each class. I think I’ll be getting a good education while having a chance to play football.”
