
IHSAA sectional pairings revealed for boys tennis, boys and girls soccer teams

Senior Luke Sorgic leads Chesterton’s tennis team into the postseason with an 18-2 record in No. 1 singles matches.

Three Chesterton sports learned their postseason pairings, revealed Sunday night on IHSAAtv.org.
Boys tennis at Valparaiso sectional: Random pairings mean that the two best teams in a section don’t necessarily meet in the final, but in this case, they likely will.
Chesterton faces Wheeler and Valparaiso plays Portage in In Wednesday’s semifinal matches at the Valparaiso sectional.
The championship is Thursday and likely will pit Chesterton against Valparaiso.
Host Valpo defeated the Trojans in the first round of last year’s sectional, 3-2, ending Chesterton’s three-year hold on sectional titles. The Trojans had won the match between the rivals in the 2024 regular season, 3-2.
Chesterton (13-3) is fresh off its sixth consecutive DAC championship, all accomplished with a 7-0 record. The Trojans defeated Valpo, 3-2, this season, scoring all three points by decisive margins. They also scored the first win over program history over Munster before wrapping up the regular season with a 4-1 loss at Culver.
All three Chesterton losses have been to teams ranked in the top 11 in the state: No. 4 Culver, No. 6 South Bend St. Joseph and No. 11 Westfield.
Chesterton, ranked No. 23 in the state, is led by No. 1 singles player Luke Sorgic, who is 18-2, brings a 12-match winning streak into the postseason, and will win his third consecutive DAC MVP award. Peytan Belgal is 13-4 at No. 2 singles, Jake Bell and Shane Henry 12-7 at No. 1 doubles, and Brady McWhirter and Ryan Tolton 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
The Trojans are seeking their 10th sectional title and ninth in 12 seasons.
Boys soccer at Kankakee Valley sectional: Chesterton drew Valparaiso in a quarterfinal match scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Kankakee Valley at 7 p.m.
Playing at home, Valpo won the most recent rivalry match1-0 on Sep. 3 and takes a 10-1-2 record into tonight’s nonconference match at Hanover Central and takes a 5-1 DAC record into Thursday’s home contest vs. first-place Lake Central.
Chesterton is 6-7-1 heading into tonight’s match at Hobart and will take a 3-3 DAC mark into Thursday’s regular season finale.
On Wednesday, Oct. 8, the winner of the Chesterton-Valpo sectional quarterfinal plays the winner of Hobart vs. Kankakee Valley in one semifinal. Portage, which drew a first-round bye, plays the winner of Lowell vs. Crown Point in the other semi.
The championship match is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m.
Girls soccer at Hobart sectional: The Trojans drew sectional host Hobart for a quarterfinal opener, Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. Valparaiso drew a bye into the semifinal round and will be waiting for the winner of the Chesterton-Hobart match. That semi is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. The winner will face the winner of Merrillville vs. Portage in a championship match on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
The Trojans are 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the DAC with two regular season matches remaining, both at home. Portage visits on Tuesday and Hanover Central is in town Thursday.
