Hammond Morton football, which hosts Chesterton tonight feature one of the region’s top football prospects, senior receiver No. 7 Cordero Bennett Jr.
Rivals and 247sports list the scholarship offers Bennett has received and one or both of the recruiting websites included Big Ten schools Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Wisconsin, SEC schools Auburn, Kentucky and Mississippi, and Kansas State of the Big 12.
Cordero is 6-foot-5 and weighs 205 pounds. In last year’s game at Chesterton, a 20-19 win for the home team, the Trojans limited Cordero to three catches for 31 yards and a touchdown.
The Governors didn’t need more than two receptions for 9 yards from Cordero to dominate transfer-depleted Portage, 34-7, in Week 1.
No. 12 sophomore Amari Price, a second-year starter at quarterback, spread the ball around and completed 16 of 24 passes for 247 yards, two touchdowns and one interception vs. Portage. He rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown.
As a junior, Chesterton kicker Mace Redman won last year’s 20-19 thriller at CHS against the Governors with a 33-yard field goal with 5:32 remaining.
The Governors are faster than Hobart, which gave Chesterton’s secondary fits on the way to winning 33-0.
