Analyzing Nebraska’s defense two years ago on the Big Ten Network, former Florida and Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer said, “I start shaking when I see the 3-3-5. I hate playing against it.”
Lake Central obviously doesn’t have the same personnel as Nebraska or any school Meyer coached against, but in talking about the challenge his team faces tonight, the first thing he mentioned was that LC plays a defense the Trojans have not seen this year.
“When I see the 3-3-5, I start shaking,” Meyer said. “I can’t stand playing against it.”
Meyer cited “the multiplicity of blitzes” as one reason.
“It’s a different kind of defense than we’ve seen the last couple of weeks,” Peterson said.
LC (2-4 overall) opened DAC play with a 26-0 win over Portage and takes a three-game losing streak (Crown Point, at LaPorte, Michigan City) into Chesterton tonight.
“It’s DAC play,” Peterson said. “You have to be prepared and focused. It doesn’t matter what the record I, it’s still DAC play and everybody’s going to play hard.”
Peterson described tonight’s foes as “huge, really big up front.”
From left to right, LC’s five offensive linemen weigh 300, 285, 270, 255, 315, an average of 285 pounds per man.
Quarterback/defensive back Cameron Reddick, No. 2, knows how to take advantage of the holes provided him. A 6-foot, 200-pound standout scholar-athlete, Reddick averaged 8.2 yards per carry last season. He ran for 511 yards and four touchdowns and passed for 1,049 yards. A three-year starter in the secondary, Reddick has committed to play defense for Air Force Academy.
The D-line has size as well, including 6-7, 255-pound tackle Isaiah Alvarez, No. 97.
“That causes problems,” Peterson said of the opponent’s size. “Any time you can control the point of attack you have a chance to win.”
Plus, Reddick isn’t Lake Central’s only player with speed. The team’s fastest player, senior defensive back Jacob White-Hutsler, No. 9, is a track star who last season ran a 10.95 in the 100 and a 21.60 in the 200.
