Tonight’s Chesterton-Hobart season-opening football game makes for an interesting matchup between schools that had to cancel their scheduled scrimmages last week in the aftermath of the derecho that tore through Northwest Indiana.
When Hobart has the ball, a lot of experience will be on both sides of the line of scrimmage. When Chesterton has possession, it will be a case of the Trojans’ unproven offense vs. the Brickies largely inexperienced defense.
The toughest assignment for Chesterton’s defense comes in trying to contain dual-threat quarterback No. 2 Aleks Tatum, who threw for 1,580 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushed for 860 yards and 13 TDs last season. Tatum averaged 7.2 yards per rush in the 2025 opener and completed 13 of 19 passes for 165 yards and a TD.
Tatum plays behind an experienced offensive line and chooses from four senior receivers who combined 18% of last season’s receiving yards and 15 of 18 TD catches.
No. 18 Bryce Tolliver caught 42 passes for 689 yards (16.4 yards per catch) and eight touchdowns, No. 20 Stephen Miller (25-459-18.4-5), and tight end/fullback/defensive end No. 19 Aiden Kasch, a two-way terror.
As a junior, Kasch rushed for 414 yards and five touchdowns, averaged 7 yards a carry, and had three TD receptions. Defensively, Kasch had 13 tackles for loss.
“They’re solid,” 14th-year Chesterton coach Mark Peterson said of the Brickies. “They’re going to be a good group of guys we’re going to have to work hard to match up against.”
