Rain led to less-than-ideal playing conditions for tennis and softball, leading to the postponement of Chesterton’s contests in both sports from Wednesday to Thursday.
Valparaiso is the Trojans’ first softball opponent in the Chesterton sectional. The semi-final game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Portage and Hobart are scheduled to play at 7 p.m.
Valpo (13-16, 6-8 in DAC) and Chesterton (11-11, 8-6) split the season series, each team winning on the other’s field. Chesterton won 14-6 on April 22 and the Vikings won 4-1 on May 14.
In tennis, Chesterton’s LaPorte regional final vs. South Bend St. Joseph, ranked No. 7 in the state, now is scheduled to take place at Kesling Park at 4:30 p.m.
The Trojans (13-4) reached the final by quickly wrapping up its semifinal vs. LaPorte, 3-2. No. 1 doubles Amelia Smith and Aleksa Sorgic won 6-0, 6-0 to improve their season record to 20-1. The No. 2 doubles players Anisa Faroh and Lauren Pilarski were next to the finish line with a 6-0, 6-1 win to improve to 21-0. No. 1 singles player Kenzie Kania (17-6) earned the third and clinching point with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Combined, the Trojans won 36 of the 37 games played in those three matches.
Thursday shapes up as a busy day for Chesterton Athletics. In addition to the softball and tennis contests, the boys track team, champion at the DAC and sectional meets, heads to Valparaiso today for the regional meet that determines which athletes advance to the state meet.
