Scouting Portage: ‘Sneaky’ opponent doesn’t have any wins but does have a playmaker at quarterback and a pair of fast receivers

Nobody had to bring up to Chesterton offensive tackle Tyler Nevious the possibility of tonight fitting the description of a “trap game” on the schedule.
Chesterton is coming of a win over chief rival Valparaiso, breaking a 14-game winning streak in the series, and Portage, tonight’s opponent is winless. If that’s not a trap game, nothing is.
“They have some pretty fast dudes,” Nevious said. “They break one free, they’re gone for a touchdown any play. I think this is one of those sneaky games. Just because they don’t have the greatest record, it’s still going to be a tough one.”
The “pretty fast dudes” are Amontae Quarles, No. 4, and Ogbonna Williamson, No. 3. Both seniors play both receiver and cornerback.
If they get open, third-year starter Kodie Young, No. 12, can find them. Young and Quarles connected on a 71-yard touchdown in a 10-6 loss to Chesterton last season.
Portage (0-5 overall, 0-3 in the DAC) let Roy Richards go after two seasons and hired former Wheeler coach Tony Klimczak as interim head coach. Portage hasn’t had any success thus far stopping opponents.
Portage’s scores, all losses: @Hammond Morton, 35-7; vs. Hobart 52-21; @Lake Central 26-0; @Merrillville 44-23; vs. Crown Point 47-7.
“They have playmakers,” guard Braxton Ozug said. “We have to come to play. Otherwise, stuff’s going to happen. Their quarterback and their receivers are pretty good.”
