Tonight marks the ninth consecutive football season that Chesterton has faced Hobart in the season opener. Since this is an odd-numbered year, today’s opener is at Brickyard Stadium, a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The Trojans are 5-3 vs. the Brickies in the eight-year span of openers and the average point totals from the schools have been Chesterton 21.25, Hobart 16, so when they meet it’s generally an exciting game.
“They have that work, work, work mentality,” Peterson said, fresh after watching more film of 2025’s first opponent scrimmaging against Griffith. “You can see that’s really a continuum.”
Peterson shared the names of a few Brickies who stood out to him on film. For the benefit of those attending the game, the players’ numbers appear in parentheses.
“They have some seniors in Logan Peters (No. 0) and Max Pickett (No. 6) on their offense who are going to be huge, huge performers for them,” Peters started. “Aleks Tatum (No. 2) is a junior returner for them at quarterback.”
Leading rusher Will Shearer graduated. Pickett was the second-leading rusher with 517 yards, a 5.6-yard average and eight rushing touchdowns. Tatum was third with 427 yards, a 5.0 average and two running touchdowns. He also threw for 1,389 yards, had a 55.9% completion percentage, threw 13 touchdowns and was intercepted six times.
Peters averaged 21.1 yards on his eight receptions, two for touchdowns.
Shifting to defense, Peters said “Aiden Kasch (No. 19) is 6-4, 225, 230, just a beast, does a great job and is going to be someone we have to contend with. I like (Vontrell) Jones (No. 41), junior linebacker and Josh Diaz (No. 66), another inside linebacker. They’re going to play hard. They get after you up front as well. And Logan Peters is a two-way player. He’s done a great job for them (at linebacker). He created havoc last year against us. We will have to contend with where Peters is.”
Peters said he also was impressed with how cornerback Nathan Sobjczynksi (No. 10) looked on film in the Brickies’ scrimmage with Griffith.
“Their numbers are a little lower,” Peterson said. “I think they only have 56 kids this year, but if you have 56 who play hard and are ready to play, that’s better than having 156 kids who don’t play hard.”
Not counting the 42 players out for freshman football, Peterson said he has 91 players on the varsity/JV roster.
