Chesterton football’s Week 2 opponent: Hammond Morton, 35-7 victors over Portage on opening night

Mike Rone creates space for Andrew Goveia in last season’s 36-23 Chesterton victory over Hammond Morton, tonight’s opponent in the Trojans’ home opener. Goveia rushed for 190 yards last season vs. Morton.

A hotshot freshman quarterback fresh off a sizzling debut vs. a DAC opponent. A 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive tackle committed to play on scholarship at an SEC school. A 6-1 cornerback bound for a MAC school all expenses paid. Speedy players at receiver, running back and in the return game.
All of that amounts to a stiff challenge for Chesterton in its home opener tonight, kickoff at 7, against Hammond Morton.
And the Governors (1-0) will try to do a better job of containing Chesterton running back Andrew Goveia than they did last season, when Goveia carried the ball 31 times and rushed for 190 yards in a 36-23 Chesterton victory in Hammond.
Morton defeated Portage 35-7 on opening night, and Chesterton lost at Hobart, 20-3.
Morton’s highly regarded freshman quarterback, No. 12 Amari Price, completed 8 of 10 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns vs. Portage.
The Governors spread explosive playmakers across the field, giving Price multiple options.
No. 2 sophomore Ameer Daniels had four receptions for 104 yards. No. 3 Davion Terry, a senior, caught three passes for 89 yards. No. 8 junior Marcus McBride had a 40-yard run.
The Governors’ line is anchored by No. 77, Kentucky recruit Cameron Miller. Senior cornerback Martece Smith, No. 0, made a verbal scholarship commitment to play for Toledo next fall.
“They had a couple of long passes Portage had some miscommunication in coverage and Morton had a long special teams return for a touchdown,” Chesterton head coach Mark Peterson said of tonight’s opponent. “Portage had some opportunities. It was 14-7 going in at halftime, so it wasn’t as though they just lined up and Morton came out and beat them, 35-7. They worked. They had to do some good things. Morton has a great group of kids.”
Peterson expects a better effort from the Trojans than they showed against the Brickies in the opener.
“Defensively, Morton has some really aggressive kids, so we’re going to have to match that coming off a loss at Hobart,” Peterson said. “I felt like we didn’t match their level of intensity from the beginning. All the sudden they punched us in the face a little bit and we have to respond better than we did. And that’s something we can do.”
