Just one day into the boys’ golf season, Chesterton showed Saturday that it has a superstar and solid depth, particularly in the freshman class, backing him.
The Trojans sent one group of golfers to the Rochester Invitational played at Round Barn and another to South Bend to play in the New Prairie Invitational at Elbel.
Jake Bobin, medalist at the Valparaiso sectional last season with a 73 before failing to get out of the regional, opened his junior season as medalist, this time firing a 72 at Round Barn, where Chesterton placed sixth out of 16 schools competing. All three of the Trojans’ other scorers at Red Barn are freshmen. Miles Mulcahy shot an 87, Massimo Popa a 93 and Dyland Duffy a 96.
Another freshman, Zac Racette, was low scorer for Chesterton at Elbel, firing an 85. Seniors Drew Pacilio (92) and Drew Barich (93) followed him and freshman Liam Henley shot a 98.
Second-year Chesterton head golf coach Marc Bruner, assisted by Adam Schultz, kept 19 players on the roster.
Zac Racette leads a freshman class that is 11 deep. In addition to Duffy, Henley, Mulcahy and Popa, Mason Bobin, James Metcalf, Tony Mitchell, Lucas Mitcheltree, Jaxson Schultz, and Brayden West are on the roster, which lists Mack Kozinski as the manager.
Seniors Mace Redman and Luke Robertson join Barich and Pacilio. Tyler Racette and Bradyn Stephan join Jake Bobin from the junior class, and Owen Sartin is the team’s lone sophomore.
Bruner said of the freshman class, “They’re going to be very good,” and the golfers wasted no time backing up their coach’s words.
