The Chesterton girls wrestling team, which opened its season at home with a win over Bishop Noll, takes its act on the road at the DAC Double Duals at Portage today at 6 p.m.
The Trojans will wrestle LaPorte and Lake Central in the event.
The Trojans have 13 girls on the team, including a freshman who brings a veteran attitude into her matches.
Freshman MJ Scharp, sister of sophomore Alice, won her high school debut with a pin at the end of the first round vs. Noll.
First-time jitters? What jitters?
“Not really,” Scharp said of a common emotion for athletes in high school debuts. “I was just excited. I knew I could either go into the match a little bit nervous or really confident, so I just decided to go in really confident.”
Scharp again wrestled under the spotlight of the new scoreboard hanging at center court on Monday night, but it wasn’t an official match, and it came during the boys team’s maroon vs. gold wrestle-offs.
Scharp won an entertaining decision vs. Ally Williams, 4-3.
