The Chesterton girls track and field team didn’t have the depth of talent to hang with Valparaiso in a season-opening dual meet at Valpo and lost, 80-52, but several Trojans did have strong meets.
Junior Kenedi Bradley, fifth-place finisher at the state meet last season, opened by winning the 100 meters (12.46) and 200 (25.80). Bradley also ran the achor leg of the 4x100 relay that lost to the Vikings by 0.37 seconds.
Junior Lux Mountford ran a 50.15 to win the 300 hurdles and Ava Persin won the pole vault by clearing 9 feet.
The Trojans did particularly well in throwing weights, scoring all but one of the 18 points in the two events. They swept the discus behind senior Spencer Autumn (116 feet, 4 inches), Anna Miles (93-0) and Tegan Werner (92-02). Back after missing last season while recovering from ACL surgery, senior Liz St. Marie won the shot put with a throw of 33-11.75 and Werner finished second with a 32-0.25.
Junior Aubrey Bamber also had a good meet for the Trojans, taking second place in the 400 meters (1:02.62) and second in the long jump with a mark of 17 feet.
The Trojans next compete at home Saturday in the Garry Nallenweg Relays.
