Chesterton girls soccer took on Merrillville for the Trojans’ senior night on Tuesday, winning 9-0 in a mercy rule shutout. Eight Trojan seniors combined to score the nine goals. Senior goalies Natalie Pieters and Suri Desch switched spots between the halves so that the other could score a goal. The game started and ended with senior Adey Avey scoring, her second goal triggering the mercy rule end of game. This is what head coach Ben Forgey had to say about the seniors, who he says are, “probably the best senior class in Northwest Indiana.”
Adey Avey: “Adey Avey is brilliant. She does stuff on the soccer field that girls don’t do. She’s creative, she’s powerful, she’s athletic, she’s super deceptive. She kind of has the whole package and she’s probably the best player in Northwest Indiana.”
Suri Desch: “Suri is a role-player for us. She's the backup goalie. She’s got great energy. Everyone that meets her enjoys her.”
Alice Fancher and Salina Ford: “Between Salina Ford and Alice Fancher, who both play center back for us, they work so great together. Neither really played center back before this year, but they are creating this partnership where Salina reads the game and is playing on the front foot and Alice is covering behind with her incredible pace and will to work together where one does one thing and the other covers for them.”
Eva Montes: “There have been times during her career where, as many good players as we have had through Chesterton, she’s been our most valuable player because you can count on her to work an entire side of a field. Attacking, defending, linking up, she just has this work rate that never stops. She’s improved year after year as a player.”
Natalie Pieters: “Natalie Pieters came over here two years ago, and she’s proven to be a solid backup goalie. She came in a little nervous, but she’s another great kid, always smiling, can have a joke but is a very sporty kid who the girls just love to have around.”
Laney Sensibaugh: “Laney Sensibaugh has probably made the biggest jump from junior to senior. She’s gotten better each year. The difference between senior Laney and every other Laney is huge. She’s so good and she’s part of our rotation and she’s an important part of our team, and it’s because she really wanted it. It’s easy to kind of coast and not improve much, but she’s said I want this senior year to be a really great one for me.”
Claire Vrahoretis: “Claire Vrahoretis is a big, strong, powerful player. She’s technical, she’s smart, she’s competitive. She wants to make the difference in games, whether that's on the attacking end or defensive end. She’s done everything for us.”
