Kenedi Bradley blew away the field in the 100 meters in the DAC championship at Crown Point on a rainy Tuesday night, running a 12.14 to take the race for the third consecutive season at the conference meet.
It was the only event Chesterton won to go with two second-place finishes. The Trojans placed fifth in the team standings.
Valparaiso’s Mia Smith won the 200 in 25.26 and Bradley, DAC champion in the event as a junior, took second with a 25.54.
Chesterton junior Arti Haney, DAC long jump champion as a freshman, almost won the event again, only to lose to Valpo senior Saylor Gapinski on a tiebreaker. The jumpers tied with a best mark of 17-7.5. In the event of a tie, whichever jumper had the better second-best jump is declared the winner, which in this case was Gapinski.
Especially considering Haney just barely scratched on one jump that would have been “in the 18s,” according to Trojans coach Lindsay Moskalick, Haney is primed for a big postseason, as predicted by Moskalick in advance of the DAC meet.
Bradley will try to earn her third consecutive sectional title in the 100 meters and second in a row in the 200 meters next Tuesday in the sectional meet at Chesterton.
As a junior, Bradley placed second at state in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200. She was fifth at the state meet in the 100 as a sophomore.
“I feel like right now I’ve been running very consistent (times) and I’m ready to break the consistency,” Bradley said. “I know I have a lot more in me, so I’m ready for that to come out.”
Chesterton had a pair of third-place finishes as well. In the final open 400 of her short experience at the event, Bradley ran a personal best 59.39. She will continue to run the distance in the 4X400 relay with fellow seniors Aubrey Bamber, Gretta McCrovitz and Aleah Tucker.
Bradley said she is glad she picked up the event this season and said she “has no idea,” whether she will run it at Butler University.
“I really liked it,” she said. “It’s definitely a mental thing. Because it’s not my event, I’m not really confident in it.”
The other third-place finish came from
sophomore Claire Thomas, who cleared 9 feet in the pole vault.
Harper Russell had the team’s next best finish, running a 16.45 for fourth place in the 100 hurdles. Natalie White took fifth in the 3200 meters, clocked in 11:24.85.
Tegan Werner was Chesterton’s top thrower, placing sixth in the discus (95-9) and eighth in the shot put (31-9).
Sophmore Hannah Haring placed sixth in the 800 meters with a 2:24.37.
The Trojans finished fourth in the 4X400 and 4X800 relays and placed fifth in the 4X100.
