Never let it be said that the Chesterton boys golf team didn’t win anything Friday at the prestigious 89th Uebele Invitational. The Trojans beat the traffic out of the parking lot.
After shooting a team score of 357, 14th in a field of 24, the Trojans quickly headed to the parking lot, their thoughts moving to the next tournament, the next hole, the next shot.
Sophomore Jake Bobin, the only non-senior in the lineup, survived a four-putt for a double bogey on No. 16 to shoot an 85, making him the Trojans’ low scorer for the third time in the third event of the week. Tyler Brown was next with an 86, which included a penalty stroke assessed for moving his ball from an unplayable lie.
“My ball got stuck in a tree,” Brown said.
Griffin Stanley also broke 90 with an 88 and Ryan Kasper’s 98 rounded out the scoring for the Trojans.
Play was particularly slow on the front nine, but not always because some of the players in the field watch too much TV and mimic PGA pros who look at every angle of the putt and twice on Sundays. There was some of that, but the fact that so many high school players generate so much power also contributed to the slow play.
“Short par 5, where everybody’s trying to get home in two, so everybody’s waiting,” Trojans coach Marc Bruner said.
Warsaw won the tournament with 307 strokes. The win meant that each of the five players on the team were presented an orange jacket, the closest thing the region has to the Masters’ green jacket ceremony. Tigers Breckin Christner and Robbie Finlinson had the low rounds, each shooting 73.
Chesterton started the week shooting a 182 Tuesday at Sand Creek, defeating Michigan City and losing to LaPorte. Bobin shot a 41, Brown a 43, junior Drew Pacilio a 43 and Stanley a 43.
Staying on their home course Thursday, the Trojans shot a 182 to defeat Merrillville and lose to Lake Central. Bobin shot a 43 and Stanley a 44. Pacilio and Brown both shot a 48.
Chesterton, featuring an all-new varsity lineup after the same five players took all five spots the past two seasons, making it to state both years, has managed to go 4-5 in DAC play. The Trojans have a match Monday vs. Valparaiso (6-3 in DAC) at Valparaiso Country.
