From the moment rising senior Kenedi Bradley walked through the door to begin her freshman year she was the best girls basketball player at Chesterton High School.
And it’s only her second-best sport.
For the second year in a row, Bradley was named the DAC MVP runner in girls track, based on winning both the 100 and 200 at the DAC meet, when she anchored the second-place 4x100 relay, and based on her performance at the state meet. She placed second in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 at state, capping a season in which she broke Camryn Dunn’s school records in both events and anchored the 4x100 that broke the school record three times. Bradley’s records: 100 (11.71), 200 (24.66). She topped that 200 time with a 24.37 at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, which took place at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in late June.
The 4x200 is not an outdoor event in Indiana dual meets, but is run at some invitationals. Chesterton’s team of Ava Kontos, Gretta McCrovitz, Kaylee Dade and Bradley ran the fastest time in school history, a 1:41.04, to finish 18th at the New Balance meet. Bradley finished 19th in the 100 with an 11.83 with temperatures approaching 100 degrees.
Determined to play one Division I sport on scholarship in college, Bradley said she will weigh her options, based on the interest level she receives in both sports, and then decide which way to go.
She will be racking up points and entertaining crowds in both sports for Chesterton for one more year.
The personable Bradley plans to add the 400 meters to her event list as a senior, but before doing that could already have another school record in the books. She is 269 points shy of breaking Jackie Campbell’s school record of 1,212 points. Bradley, a three-time All-DAC selection in basketball, has averaged 314 points per season for the Trojans. She’s playing AAU ball for the Illinois Lady Lightning this summer.
A sport-by-sport look at Chesterton’s 20 All-DAC athletes for the spring 2025 season, listed in order of the teams with the most selections:
Boys track (7): Kieran Barnewall, Owen Edlen, Nolan Johnston, Louis Raffin, Aaron Resto, Nathan Vaughan, Cal Wisniewski.
Johnston’s first season of track came in his senior year but that didn’t stop him from loading up a trophy case. He broke his own school record with a 6-foot-11 jump to win the regional meet and matched that at the state meet to earn a second-place medal. Early in the season, Johnston vaulted 6-10-1/4 to break Matt Nover’s record of 6-10, which had stood since 1987.
As a junior, Kieran Barnewall set school records in the 110 and 300 hurdles races, and set new ones as a senior. As a senior, he won the DAC, sectional and regional meets in the 110 hurdles and at the state meet broke his own record with a 13.82, good for fifth place. His school record in the 300 is 38.75. Barnewall will run for Indiana State next season.
Owen Edlen set personal marks in the discus (163-4) and shot put (56-6) during a strong senior season. He earned All-DAC honors by winning the discus at the DAC Championship with a toss of 154-2 and won the sectional with his personal mark. He finished 12th at state in the shot put.
Resto, Wisniewski, Vaughn and Raffin teamed for a 3:19.21 and a seventh-place medal at state, which earned them All-DAC honors. Chesterton’s 4x400 relay took first at the sectional and regional meets.
Raffin and Resto both broke 50 seconds multiple times in the open 400, Raffin going as low as 49.23, Resto as low as 49.40.
Vaughn’s big junior season included a 10.81 in the 100, a 21.96 in the 200, a 22-5.5 long jump and a 40.07 in the 300 hurdles.
Raffin, Vaughan and Wisniewski have one year remaining at CHS.
Girls tennis (3): Kenzie Kania, Aleksa Sorgic, Amelia Smith.
Kania, on course to spend her senior season at No. 1 singles for the third consecutive year, went 17-7 from the top spot as a junior for the sectional champions.
Sorgic and Smith went 24-2 at No. 1 doubles and made it deeper into the individual postseason tournament than any tandem in program history. They advanced to the North 2 regional at North Central High in Indianapolis, defeating Fairfield to make it to the regional final, where the Trojans lost to Park Tudor.
Kania returns at No. 1 singles and Smith will break in a new No. 1 doubles partner.
Boys volleyball (3): Bryton Oliver, Jack Rodriguez, Robert Williams.
The first season of IHSAA-sanctioned boys volleyball was a memorable one for Chesterton. The Trojans opened the season with an 8-0 burst on the way to a 25-5 record, a second-place finish in the DAC and a runner-up finish in the nine-school Michigan City sectional.
The trio of seniors named to the all-conference team led the way.
Oliver and Williams formed a strong tandem in the middle and each blocked 90 shots. Rodriguez, an outside hitter, fired up the team with his leaping ability and all-around play.
Oliver finished 11th in the state with a .327 hitting percentage.
Baseball (2): Troy Barrett, Nick Foust.
Barrett went 7-1 with a 1.11 ERA with 15 walks and 95 strikeouts in 50-2/3 innings. He allowed just one home run. At the plate, he led the team in batting (.368), doubles (12), triples (3) and OPS (1.013). He also led the team with five stolen bases.
It didn’t take long for Foust to send a signal that his senior season would be a good one. The team’s right fielder hammered a seventh-inning grand slam to lead the Trojans to a season-opening win at New Prairie.
Foust finished second on the team in batting (.321), RBI (22) and doubles (six).
Boys golf (2): Jake Brown, Jake Bobin.
Late to the game, Brown made his only season of high school golf a memorable one golfing from the No. 2 spot as a senior in Chesterton’s lineup.
Bobin, rock solid in the regular season, exploded in a good way in the postseason. The highlight of his sophomore season came in the sectional at Forest Park, when he was medalist with a 73, four strokes better than the second-place finisher, Valparaiso’s Colin Kaleth. Bobin also impressed at the DAC tournament with an 82 at Sand Creek to win a fifth-place medal that led the Trojans to a surprising third-place finish.
Softball (2): Alexia Franco, Olivia Milton.
Some of the most exciting plays of a season that will be remembered most for powerful bats delivering in the clutch came when Franco, the center fielder, threw home to catcher Olivia Milton in time to cut down a baserunner.
Both all-conference players also got the job done at the plate.
As a sophomore Milton led the team with a .417 average, a 1.191 OPS and nine doubles. She hit four home runs.
Franco led the team with 30 runs, hit eight doubles, hit two home runs and stole five bases, capping her four-year varsity career with a strong season.
A handful of players who had all-conference-caliber seasons return next season, joining Milton: Payton Cherep, Hannah Florian, Lila Miller and Jillienne Pittman.
Girls track (1): Kenedi Bradley.
Winning an event at the DAC championship and earning a medal at state are the two paths to earning all-conference honors. Bradley qualified in both of those areas in both the 100 meters and 200 meters.
It’s a testament to the team’s depth and efficient decision-making as to which events to use the most talented athletes that
The Trojans finishing third in the highly competitive DAC with just one athlete earning all-conference honors is a testament to the team’s depth and wisdom in deciding which events to use the team’s top athletes.
